Every Colorado parent soon discovers that if you want to feed your baby fresh produce, you have to roll with the growing season in Colorado. This can be challenging, but it’s definitely doable and rewarding! While the seasons are short, there are still many options to choose from. Learning what is available during the cool and warm seasons is the first step to having fresh food and to keep it local which has always been an important value of our family.
An abundance of produce grows best in cool weather, which is great during the early spring and fall. Broccoli and cauliflower both can be planted in April and September, producing fresh veggies around 8 weeks later. Same goes for kale and spinach providing harvests twice a year! Root crops such as carrots, beets and peas can be planted in the early spring with their yield coming 8 weeks later.
The summer growing season also brings a lot of exciting produce. Beans, corn and squash (amongst a few) can be planted after the first frost, with harvest times varying from 8-12 weeks. Fruits are also plentiful during this time. Peaches and pears (and berries!!) are both found throughout Colorado with harvest from August to October. With the right planning, produce that comes at the end of summer and fall can be frozen or canned and used throughout the winter, providing Colorado produce to you and I all year long!
The best part of making your own local baby food is being creative with what our community farmers have to offer—or your own garden!
Cheers to you and your little one!

After the birth of our child in 2012, we realized that a healthy, fresh diet was of the utmost importance to the development of our baby. We started to experiment with local, organic fruits and veggies and found that our child loved the taste of fresh food without the preservatives of store bought baby food. Every weekend we would prep meals for the following week and freeze them to make them accessible whenever needed.
By using only fresh, local and organic fruits and veggies, we realized that our own prepared food tasted better than store bought baby food. The process of making our own baby food brought us great pleasure and gave our baby the nutrient rich food he needed at such a young age.
We understand the importance of your child and hope Lil Head Organics can make things easier so you have time to enjoy the lil things that matter to your family.
