This simple project makes a great baby shower gift or toy to keep your own little one entertained. The ribbon loops (tags) are fun for baby to play with and you can also hang toys or rings from them for added entertainment.
Materials:
Fabric Square (Cotton or Flannel is best)
Minky Fabric Square (minky is a super soft, textured fabric that babies love)
Assorted Ribbon – 1 yard total
Plastic Square – I use the plastic from a diaper or wipes package. You could also use a Ziploc bag
Sewing machine, thread, pins, needle, scissors
STEP 1: Cut your cotton or flannel fabric into a square – any size will work, mine was 8”x8”. Cut your Minky and plastic into the same size square.
STEP 2: Cut coordinating ribbon into 6” long pieces. I used 8 pieces of ribbon, 2 on each side of the square. Fold the ribbons in half and pin to your cotton or flannel fabric. Be sure the ribbons are pinned with the loops on top of the fabric, matching raw edges of the ribbon and fabric as pictured below.
STEP 3: Sew around your square as close to the edge as possible to secure the ribbons in place. Remove pins.
STEP 4: Place the piece of fabric with ribbons attached face up on your work surface. Place your piece of minky fabric on top of it, face down. Finally, place a square of plastic on top. Pin all 3 layers together.
*Be sure you layer them in this order! Use LOTS of pins as the minky and the plastic are slippery!
STEP 5: Sew around the square with a 5/8″ seam allowance, leaving a 2” to 3” opening on one side so you can turn it.
STEP 6: Clip corners. Remove pins.
Step 7: Turn right side out. Fold under the fabric where you left it open and iron the entire square. Be sure to iron it on the cotton or flannel side, NOT the minky side!
Step 8: Top stitch around the entire square being sure to catch both fabrics at the opening that you folded under so you close up that opening.
Trim threads and you’re done! Now give it to baby to enjoy ☺
Trista Gangestad is the mommy behind the mommy-made items for little boys and girls at Sweet Pea Boutique. Sweet Pea Boutique was inspired by and is named after her own little sweet pea, her daughter Kinsey. When Kinsey was born, Trista gave up her career in public relations to be a stay-at-home mom. But honestly, she was bored and needed something to keep herself busy. So she resurected the sewing skills her own mother taught her as a young girl and started making things for her own daughter. This blossomed into creating all kinds of adorable items for little ones.
Her creations are inspired by the concept of dressing little boys and girls like miniature versions of adults. She dress Kinsey “to the 9s” every day (her husband says she think she is a dress-up doll)! There’s no need for little girls to wear babyish prints when they look adorable in bold fabrics and what little boy doesn’t look dashing in a bow tie?
