Listen…
I get you.
Traffic is annoying! It’s frustrating! Other cars speeding up just to slam on their brakes (not you, right? Just other cars…)
You change lanes to try to get ahead only to get behind.
UGH!
I was in this predicament the other day. The worst part is that I had the expectation that I would miss all of the traffic, because I left Denver at 3pm. ‘YES!’, I thought, ‘BOOYAH, Mr. Holding-Me-Down, Wasting-My-Time, Crampin’-My-Style Freeway Man! I will miss your hellish traffic just this once, and you can’t do a thing about it!’
I grabbed myself a Grande Passion Iced Tea from Starbucks and turned onto the freeway with an internal smile.
I didn’t even get through three sips of my tea before traffic began locking up. ‘NO!’, I thought. ‘Not me. Not today!’
I sat there for a second feeling defeated and slightly antsy, and then I had a realization.
I can either contribute to the misery of this drive by pouting, or I can use my time wisely. Ok, maybe “wisely” wasn’t the right word for it. “Wisely” almost makes it sound like I used the time to mentally review the material I had just learned in my Fit4Mom classes or mentally practice choreography for my upcoming Zumba and Turbo Kickboxing classes. Nope… that’s not what I did.
What I DID do what have a private concert and dance party! I turned up some of my favorite songs and I belted them out. This curbed most of the antsy-ness. However, when I felt it creeping up again, I added in some small dance moves: some small shoulder shrugs, some shoulder circles forward and then back, some elbow moves, a little wiggling at the torso, and even the side-to-side, belly dancing head move. I know that makes no sense, but at least I got you moving at your computer screen. I wish I had a camera to see you trying to do all of the small dance moves I just described. Priceless!
So, what’s the point? Make the best of the situation you find yourself in! I definitely need a reminder in this area, so I know I’ll be revisiting this post nearly daily. 🙂 Please join the conversation below so we can all have more ideas in our tool boxes.
