Don’t you feel accomplished when you make something from scratch, especially when tastes 10-times better?
Well, then, try this easy applesauce recipe! My daughter and I can eat 10 apples worth of applesauce in 2 days if I had no restraint!
INGREDIENTS:
-8-10 apples of any kind– I used Washington Extra Fancy, but you can do a few of several different kinds. I’ve discovered that the taste doesn’t seem to change much to me
-2 tbsp brown sugar compacted, honey, or agave syrup
-1 tbsp lemon juice (I use the kind in the plastic, yellow, lemon-shaped container, but you can squeeze a fresh lemon if you so desire– if you do, throw in a slice or two of the peel.)
-1 cinnamon stick + 1 tsp ground cinnamon
-cranberries* (great addition in the Fall and Winter!)
DIRECTIONS:
1) Peel all of your apples
2) Cut your apples in 1″ pieces for chunky apple sauce (great for toddler hands!), 1/4″ for a consistency more like the traditional applesauce, or varied sizes for both kinds in the same bowl.
3) Throw all of your apples into the crockpot and add the brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon stick, and ground cinnamon (sprinkled around the tops of the apples). Stir gently to combine (you won’t combine it entirely- this is just to get the brown sugar out of giant hilltops).
4) Cook on LOW for 4-6hrs, stir contents once at the half-way mark.
If you leave your house and come back, you’ll smell that wonderful cinnamon and apple aroma. So good!
When it’s finished, remove the cinnamon stick. You can mash it up with a spoon or potato masher to get the consistency you like. Let it cool a bit before putting it in the refrigerator. You can leave it in the refrigerator for a max of 4 days, but I doubt it’ll be there for that long if you household likes it as much as mine does. If you still have some left by the 4th day, freeze it or throw it away.
ENJOY!
*If you use cranberries, add 1 tbsp more of your sweetener in order to off-set the tartness, if desired.
