Doing your laundry has a bigger impact on the planet than you might think. By making simple eco-friendly choices in your laundry room, not only will you extend the life of your clothing and save money, but you can reduce your environmental impact too. Here are some simple tips to help you get started:
1) Use energy efficient appliances (look for Energy Star certification). If your appliances are from 1994 or earlier it may be time to consider replacing them – but don’t do it unless absolutely necessary, that would be wasteful.
2) Wash all your clothes on ‘cold’ whenever possible.
3) Wash full loads – machines will run more efficiently and you’ll do fewer loads.
4) Don’t overload your washer. Clothes must be able to move freely in the washer in order to get clean.
5) Skip the chemical detergents – use a natural alternative such as soap nuts, laundry balls, or make your own laundry soap.
6) Avoid bleach whenever possible – whiten clothes with either lemon juice, peroxide, or vinegar + water + sunshine. If you must use bleach, use chlorine free.
7) Clean the lint filter in your dryer after every load of laundry for maximum air circulation and efficiency.
8) Replace your dryer sheets – use natural healthier versions, wool dryer balls or simply go without. Static cling occurs from over drying your clothes.
9) Whenever possible, hang dry your clothes. It’ll lengthen the life of your clothes too.
10) Try to do several loads of laundry at once. When you pop a pile of wet clothes in the dryer right after you’ve finished a previous load, it takes advantage of the leftover heat.
